This is a list of
Australian books which would presumably have won a literary award at the time
of publication, before such awards were given out. It represents a year by
year 'best of'.
Some years have
no books listed. In the very early days of colonisation, this was due to the
lack of publication of books. In later years, it is the result of published
books being unworthy recipients of ansuch an award.
The list is based
on a number of sources including: popularity, book sales, significance, award
lists, etc.
Categories
include: Novel, Short Stories, Poetry, Children's Literature, and Non-Fiction.
From 1788-1849,
only years with a 'winning' book are listed. From 1850, each year is listed.
